Founding Dean of the College of Engineering at Brigham Young University. Prominent Physicist. Credited with inventing the hearing aid and the first audiometer.

1907 - Received a B.S. degree from Brigham Young University.

1911 - Earned his Ph.D. in physics, summa cum laude. University of Chicago. Worked with Robert Millikan on the determination of "e".

1911 - Brigham Young University, Chairman of the Physics Department

c1916 - Western Electric Company in New York. Assigned to do research in sound.

1924 - Awarded the Louis E. Levy Medal for physical measurements of audition by the Franklin Institute.

1928 - Made Director of Acoustical Research at Bell Laboratories.

1929 - Co-founded Acoustical Society of America
President of the American Physical Society

c1935 - Made Director of Physical Research at Bell Laboratories. He supervised the work of Shockley, Brattain, and Bardeen in the development of the transistor; Dean Wooldridge, James Fiske, Charles Towne, and many other outstanding physicists.

1952 - Brigham Young University, Director of Research
1960 until his death at the age of 96 (1981) Actively pursued the study of musical tones.
